Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge

The Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge is located just inside the city limits of Fort Worth, Texas. It is a hidden jewel, a wilderness comprised of forests, prairies and wetlands reminiscent of how much of the Fort Worth/Dallas metroplex once looked. Replete with native flora and fauna, the area beckons to those searching for a piece of nature to refresh their spirits and reintroduce a measure of tranquility to their increasingly urban lifestyles.

Each year the park, which is a satellite area managed by the Nature Center staff, is home to one of the most spectacular wildflower displays in their area.

Now is your chance to find out. Join members of the Dallas-Fort Worth Herpetological Society as they answer your questions and allow you to view their specimens. It is a great opportunity to learn about one of the most misunderstood groups of animals living in their area.

      06/01/12	Full Moon Paddle Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge Full Moon Paddle Presented by Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge at Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge June 1, 2012 Come and join them for a different type of Canoe Tour in the evening hours. This program will present new opportunities like hearing beavers slap the water with their tails and seeing other wildlife, like deer and raccoons. Canoes, paddles and lifejackets are provided. Children must be 5 years or older. Parents must sign a liability waiver for minor children.
      06/01/12	Early Birds Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge Early Birds Presented by Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge at Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge June 1, 2012 Come and join a naturalist as they try to wake up with the birds. They will take a leisurely hike around the Nature Center to see if they can find some birds beginning their day. This is the best time of the day to see their fine feathered friends. Bring your binoculars and cameras to enhance your birding experience.
      06/02/12	National Trails Day Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge National Trails Day Presented by Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge at Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge June 2, 2012 The first Saturday of June is National Trails Day. Come out to the Nature Center and make your mark on their trails. Start the morning volunteering with Natural Guard improving their trails. For all Natural Guard volunteers, join them for a hike along the Canyon Ridge Trail and learn about the CCC's contribution to the Nature Center.
      06/03/12	Life on the Prairie, Prairie Vertebrates Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge Life on the Prairie, Prairie Vertebrates Presented by Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge at Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge June 3, 2012 Animals of the prairie such as bison and White-tailed Deer can be seen at the Nature Center. They will discuss some of these vertebrates and we will take off to find as many of these animals and/or signs of these animals as they can.
      06/05/12	Venus Transit Day Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge Venus Transit Day Presented by Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge at Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge June 5, 2012 Since Venus orbits between the Earth and the Sun, they have the opportunity to see it transit (pass in front of the Sun) every so often. They will have that opportunity. Join Nature Center staff and Fort Worth Astronomical Society members in celebrating this event. they will have activities for kids and of course, scopes set up to see Venus move across the sky with the Sun as their backdrop.

      06/10/12	Life on the Prairie, Prairie Invertebrates Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge Life on the Prairie, Prairie Invertebrates Presented by Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge at Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge June 10, 2012 Last week they discussed vertebrates, this week they will discuss invertebrates of the prairie. Prairie invertebrates are numerous and they have an opportunity to identify as many as they can and discuss their role in the prairie.

Canoes/kayaks, paddles and lifejackets provided. Children in canoes must be 5 years or older and accompanied by a parent or guardian. Kayakers must be at least 14 years old and accompanied by their guardian, otherwise at least 18 years old. Parents must sign a liability waiver for minor children.

      06/30/12	Off the Beaten Path Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge Off the Beaten Path Presented by Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge at Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge June 30, 2012 Summer is not typically the most desired time to go hiking in North Central Texas. However, if you prepare in advance with cooler clothes, water and a shaded trail, you can enjoy an excursion. They have a path where you will be completely covered with shade and it is a trail that gets overlooked all the time. Join them and discover this hidden treasure that is off the beaten path.
